description

Splined shaft hubs connect rotating components when torque has to get through without slippage - internal splines mate with external splines, distributing load across more teeth than a keyway arrangement can manage. Medical imaging equipment, aerospace actuators, and industrial automation drivetrains use splines for this kind of positive, precise connection.

17-4 PH stainless precipitation-hardens to good strength levels while maintaining corrosion resistance - suitable for marine, medical, and food-processing applications where rust cannot be tolerated. 4340 alloy steel takes on higher torque for aerospace and military applications where both strength and weight matter.

Broaching or milling produces the internal teeth - tolerances on major diameter, minor diameter, and tooth spacing are tight because the geometry determines how evenly load distributes across the engagement.

Splined vs. Keyway Connections

Splines handle higher torque with better load distribution than keyways, accommodate angular misalignment more gracefully, and are easier to assemble and disassemble - which matters in applications where maintenance access is frequent.

Quality is non-negotiable in precision manufacturing. Every component undergoes rigorous inspection at each stage of production.

  • ISO 13485 - Full FDA compliance support; quality management system for medical device components
  • ISO 11607 / FDA 21 CFR 820 - Packaging and sterilization validation for implantable and surgical devices
  • ASTM F136 / F67 - Material specification compliance for implant-grade titanium and stainless
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) - Full dimensional and functional report for every medical component
  • CMM Inspection - Coordinate measuring for complex geometries and tight tolerances
  • Surface Roughness Measurement - Ra, Rz, and Rt charting with every inspection report
  • Passivation / Electropolishing - ASTM A967 procedures for corrosion resistance
  • Material Traceability - Heat number tracking from raw material to finished part

From raw material to finished product, every step is controlled and documented:

  • Material Selection - Ground bar or forged blank with material certification
  • Rough Machining - CNC turning to steps, grooves, and features
  • Splining / Keyway Cutting - Hobbing or broaching for transmission features
  • Heat Treatment - Induction hardening, case-hardening, or through-hardening
  • Finish Grinding - Centerless or between-centers grinding for final diameter/tolerance
  • Polishing / Superfinishing - Ra 0.2–0.8 μm surface finish for bearing surfaces
  • Inspection & Packaging - CMM check, surface roughness report, rust prevention packaging
