Cast pipe flanges connect piping sections and equipment with bolted joints that can be assembled and disassembled - the flange face provides the sealing surface for the gasket, and the bolt holes align with the mating flange. The casting process produces complex geometries efficiently for the wide variety of flange types used in industrial piping. Flat face flanges: the entire face is a sealing surface - used when the mating flange is also flat face, typically in low-pressure applications or with full-face gaskets. Raised face flanges: the center of the face protrudes - the most common industrial flange style. Ring type joint (RTJ): a groove in the face accepts a metal ring gasket for high-pressure and high-temperature service.

Why Flange Class and Pressure Rating Must Match
A Class 150 flange is rated for its pressure-temperature combination - at room temperature it handles more pressure than at elevated temperature. Using a Class 150 flange at the pressure its higher-temperature rating allows is a design error. The pressure rating is a function of both pressure AND temperature, not just pressure alone.
