Compressor housings contain the compression elements - scroll sets, pistons and cylinders, or rotors - and provide the mounting interface for the motor and associated piping. The housing must maintain precise clearances between rotating and stationary components through thermal expansion, and provide adequate heat dissipation for the compression process. Aluminum housings dominate in HVAC and refrigeration compressors because aluminum dissipates heat well and is light enough to make the unit manageable for installation. The die casting process produces smooth surfaces and tight tolerances in high volumes.

Clearance Control in Compression Chambers

 

The clearance between the scroll sets or between piston and cylinder determines compressor efficiency. Too little clearance: thermal expansion during operation causes galling and seizure. Too much clearance: compression ratio drops and efficiency falls. Aluminum expands about 2.4 mm per meter at operating temperature - the housing design must account for this.
