90 degree cast pipe elbows change direction in piping systems - the radius of the bend determines how much pressure loss occurs and how much space the elbow needs. Short radius (1D) elbows have the tightest bend but highest pressure drop. Long radius (1.5D and 2D) elbows cost more in material but reduce pressure loss significantly. The elbow is cast as a single piece with threaded or flanged ends for connection. Sand casting handles the full range of sizes and pressure ratings. Shell mold casting produces better surface finish and dimensional accuracy for the smoother bore that reduces turbulence.

Why Center-to-End Dimension Matters

 

The C-to-E (center to end) dimension determines how the elbow fits into the piping system layout. Most specifications call out standard C-to-E dimensions - deviating from those standards requires custom piping design and more fittings to compensate. Long radius (1.5D) elbows have C-to-E equal to 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter. Short radius (1D) is equal to the diameter.
