Automotive steering knuckles are the pivot points where the steering system connects to the suspension - the knuckle carries the wheel load, transmits steering forces, and positions the wheel relative to the suspension. The knuckle must be strong enough to handle high cornering loads and impact from road hazards without deforming or cracking. Ductile iron is the most common material for steering knuckles - the nodular graphite microstructure provides good strength and toughness at reasonable cost. The lost foam casting process produces near-net-shape knuckle geometry with good surface finish and consistent mechanical properties.

Why the Knuckle Geometry Is Complex

 

The knuckle has multiple machined surfaces: steering arm attachment, tie rod connection, ball joint or bearing seats, brake caliper mounting, and wheel hub interface. These surfaces must be machined to close tolerances relative to each other for proper suspension alignment and steering geometry. A knuckle that is machined incorrectly will cause tire wear and handling problems even if the casting itself is sound.
