Threaded ductile iron fittings connect pipe sections with tapered threads - NPT (National Pipe Thread Tapered) in North America, BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered) elsewhere. The fitting threads are tapered so that as the male thread goes deeper into the female, the interference creates a seal. Thread sealant (Teflon tape or pipe dope) fills any remaining leakage path. Ductile iron fittings handle most water, oil, and compressed air applications at a lower cost than malleable iron or forged fittings. The ductile iron body is stronger than gray iron and less brittle than malleable iron.
Why Thread Sealant Selection Matters
Teflon tape: works well for most applications but can shred and migrate into the system. For pneumatic tools and instrumentation, this is a problem. Pipe dope: provides better sealing for gas applications but can crack if the fitting is in a vibration-prone location. For vibration service, use a thread sealant designed for vibrating conditions.
