description

Titanium alloy castings provide titanium's exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance in complex shapes - titanium is 40% lighter than steel with comparable strength, and resists corrosion in seawater and chlorides that quickly degrade most other metals. The casting process produces near-net-shape parts at a lower cost than forging or CNC machining. Ti-6Al-4V is the workhorse titanium alloy - used in aerospace airframes, engine components, and medical implants. The ELI (extra low interstitial) variant has better fracture toughness for critical applications. Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr (Ti-5553) is a newer beta titanium alloy with higher strength potential for aerospace applications.

Why Titanium Castings Are Expensive

Titanium melts at 1668°C - above the melting point of most steel alloys and far above what most foundries can handle. The crucible and mold materials that survive that temperature are expensive, and titanium's reactivity at high temperature means the melt must be protected from atmospheric contamination. This is why titanium castings cost significantly more than steel or aluminum castings of similar size.

FAQ

Q1: MOQ?

A1: 10 pieces for titanium castings.

Q2: Materials?

A2: Ti-6Al-4V (standard), Ti-6Al-4V ELI (medical/aerospace), Ti-5553 (high strength).

Q3: Casting method?

A3: Investment casting - cold chamber for most alloys, hot chamber for some beta alloys.

Q4: Surface finish?

A4: As-cast (standard), machined (critical surfaces), shot peened (fatigue enhancement).

Q5: Tolerances?

A5: Investment casting provides good dimensional accuracy - ±0.1 mm typical.

Q6: Custom configurations?

A6: Yes. Custom geometries, material substitutions, post-cast heat treatments.

Quality is non-negotiable in precision manufacturing. Every component undergoes rigorous inspection at each stage of production.

  • ISO 13485 - Full FDA compliance support; quality management system for medical device components
  • ISO 11607 / FDA 21 CFR 820 - Packaging and sterilization validation for implantable and surgical devices
  • ASTM F136 / F67 - Material specification compliance for implant-grade titanium and stainless
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) - Full dimensional and functional report for every medical component
  • CMM Inspection - Coordinate measuring for complex geometries and tight tolerances
  • Surface Roughness Measurement - Ra, Rz, and Rt charting with every inspection report
  • Passivation / Electropolishing - ASTM A967 procedures for corrosion resistance
  • Material Traceability - Heat number tracking from raw material to finished part

From raw material to finished product, every step is controlled and documented:

  • Pattern Making - Wooden or metal pattern fabrication for sand/centrifugal/investment casting
  • Molding - Sand casting, shell mold, centrifugal, or lost-wax investment casting setup
  • Melting & Pouring - Controlled furnace melting with chemistry and temperature monitoring
  • Solidification & Shakeout - Controlled cooling with riser/removal and core shakeout
  • Heat Treatment - Annealing, normalizing, or solution treatment per specification
  • Machining - CNC machining, drilling, and tapping to final dimensions
  • Surface Treatment - Grinding, welding, or coating as required
  • Inspection & Testing - Dimensional, visual, hydrostatic, or NDT inspection
  • Cleaning & Packaging - Sand removal, degreasing, rust prevention, and packaging
