description

Forged shaft blanks start as rough forged shapes that are subsequently machined to final dimensions - the forging process produces a grain structure aligned with the part geometry, which gives the blank better mechanical properties than bar stock of the same material. For shafts subject to high stress and cyclic loading, the improved grain flow and density of forging makes a real difference in service life. Open-die forging produces stepped or contoured blanks that require more machining to reach final dimensions but allows flexibility in quantities as low as one piece. Closed-die forging produces near-net-shape blanks with minimal machining required.

Why Forging Over Bar Stock

Bar stock has grain that runs along the bar axis - which is fine for simple shafts but wrong for shoulders, keyways, and steps where the grain gets cut. Forging orients the grain with the part contour, giving the full cross-section the strength it needs where it bends. For shafts with shoulders and steps under significant load, a forged blank outperforms bar stock of the same material every time.

FAQ

Q1: MOQ?

A1: 5 pieces for open-die. Higher quantities for closed-die.

Q2: Materials?

A2: 1045, 4140 carbon/ally steel. 4340 for highest strength applications.

Q3: Forging methods?

A3: Open-die (flexible, low quantities) and closed-die (net-shape, high quantities).

Q4: Heat treatment?

A4: Annealed, normalized, or Q&T supplied based on your subsequent machining and heat treatment needs.

Q5: Weight range?

A5: 0.5 kg to 50 kg per blank depending on forging method.

Q6: Custom configurations?

A6: Yes. Stepped diameters, keyways, flange features pre-forged into the blank.

Quality is non-negotiable in precision manufacturing. Every component undergoes rigorous inspection at each stage of production.

  • ISO 9001:2015 - Quality management system covering design and manufacturing
  • API 6D / API 600 - Design and testing compliance for valve components and flanges
  • Hydrostatic Pressure Testing - Every valve body pressure-tested to 1.5× rated pressure
  • MPI / LPI - Magnetic particle and liquid penetrant inspection for weld integrity
  • CE / ATEX - Pressure equipment directive compliance for EU market available
  • Passivation / Electropolishing - ASTM A967 procedures for corrosion resistance
  • Material Traceability - Heat number tracking from raw material to finished part

From raw material to finished product, every step is controlled and documented:

  • Billet Heating - Precision heating to forging temperature with temperature monitoring
  • Forging - Closed-die, open-die, or ring rolling to near-net shape
  • Trimming / Piercing - Flash removal and bore operations
  • Heat Treatment - Through-hardening, case-hardening, or age-hardening as required
  • Finishing Machining - CNC machining, grinding, or super-finishing to final dimensions
  • Surface Treatment - Anodizing, plating, or shot peening as specified
  • Inspection & Testing - Dimensional check, hardness testing, surface inspection
  • Cleaning & Packaging - Degreasing, rust prevention, and protective packaging
