Blind rivet nut assemblies install where access is only from one side - the rivet nut is inserted into a pre-drilled hole and a pulling tool draws a mandrel through the nut, deforming the body to clamp against the back of the material. The result is a load-bearing threaded fastener in materials where a standard nut would not fit. The rivet nut body deforms and flows into the material - the blind installation means no access needed to the far side of the joint. This makes rivet nuts the standard solution for sheet metal connections, hollow sections, and any application where the far side is inaccessible. Aluminum rivet nuts are the lightest weight option - 6061 and 5052 aluminum provide good strength with minimal added weight. Steel rivet nuts are used where higher strength or lower cost is needed. 304 stainless provides corrosion resistance for outdoor and marine applications.

The Hole Size Is Critical
Blind rivet nuts require a properly sized hole - too small and the rivet nut will not fit. Too large and the rivet nut will spin in the hole without gripping. The recommended hole size is typically just slightly larger than the rivet nut body diameter. Check the manufacturer's spec for the specific rivet nut series. If you are drilling the hole, use a letter drill or a drill one size up from the body diameter - do not guess with a random drill bit.
