description

Hardened flat washers distribute the load from the fastener over a larger area - the hardened washer does not deform under the clamping load the way a softer washer would, maintaining the joint preload over the fastener's service life. In structural and high-stress applications, the hardened washer is the only choice. ASTM F436 defines the requirements for hardened structural washers - the standard specifies the material (heat treated carbon steel), hardness (Rc 38-45), and dimensional requirements. The heavy series washers have greater thickness for more load distribution and better resistance to buckling under high loads. 1070 and 1080 high-carbon steel are the standard materials for hardened washers - the higher carbon content allows the material to be heat treated to the required hardness while maintaining adequate ductility to prevent brittleness. 420 stainless washers provide the hardness with corrosion resistance for outdoor and marine applications.

What Happens With a Soft Washer

A soft washer (commercial grade, no hardness spec) under a high-load bolted joint will compress and flow under the clamp load - not dramatically, but enough to reduce the preload over time. In a structural connection where the preload is the load path, this relaxation matters. In a standard machinery joint with controlled torque, it may not matter much. The hardened washer is the spec choice when preload maintenance is important.

Q3: Hardness range?

A3: Rc 38-45 for structural washers. Rc 40-50 for stainless washers.

Q4: Standards?

A4: ASTM F436 for structural hardened washers. Standard and heavy series.

Q5: Custom configurations?

A5: Yes. Custom sizes, materials, hole configurations.

Q6: Heat treatment?

A6: Heat treated after pressing to develop uniform hardness through cross-section.

Quality is non-negotiable in precision manufacturing. Every component undergoes rigorous inspection at each stage of production.

  • ISO 9001:2015 - Certified quality management system covering design, machining, and inspection
  • Passivation / Electropolishing - ASTM A967 procedures for corrosion resistance
  • Material Traceability - Heat number tracking from raw material to finished part
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) - Full dimensional report included with every new order

From raw material to finished product, every step is controlled and documented:

  • Wire / Bar Preparation - Cold heading or CNC blanking to near-net shape
  • Thread Rolling / Cutting - Thread rolling for rolled threads or die cutting for cut threads
  • Heat Treatment - Case-hardening or through-hardening for strength requirement
  • Surface Treatment - Plating, coating, or passivation as specified
  • Final Inspection - Dimensional check, torque testing, and surface inspection
  • Packaging - Bulk bag, polybag, or plastic tub with labeling and traceability
