Precision aluminum castings produce complex aluminum shapes with tight dimensional tolerances and smooth surfaces - die casting and investment casting achieve tolerances that approach CNC machining from bar stock, at a cost that is competitive for production volumes. The result is a near-net-shape aluminum component with good mechanical properties. A356-T6 is the standard precision casting aluminum - excellent fluidity for filling thin sections and responds well to heat treatment. 6061-T6 is used when the casting will be machined or welded. 7075-T6 is the highest-strength aluminum alloy, used in aerospace structural applications.

Die Casting vs. Investment Casting for Aluminum

 

Die casting: higher pressure injection fills thin walls faster, producing smoother surfaces and higherYield. But die casting tooling is expensive - the tooling cost only makes sense for 10,000+ pieces. Investment casting: lower tooling cost but higher per-piece cost. Better for complex geometries with internal passages and lower volumes.
