description

Flange head bolts combine the bearing area of a flange with the driving convenience of a hex head - the flange under the head distributes the clamping load over a larger area than a standard hex head bolt, reducing the risk of damage to the joint surface and providing better resistance to vibration loosening. The flange under the head provides a larger bearing surface that prevents the bolt from pulling through the joint material - this is especially important in automotive applications where the joint surface may be a softer material like aluminum or plastics. The integrated flange also eliminates the washer that a standard hex head bolt would require, reducing parts count and assembly time. 10B21 and 10B22 boron steel handle Grade 8 applications - good strength with good machinability and cost effectiveness. 4340 alloy steel provides the higher strength for Grade 10 applications where higher clamping force is required. The flange diameter and thickness are standardized per DIN 6921 or ASME B18.2.3 - the standard dimensions ensure interchangeability with other manufacturers' flange head bolts.

Where the Bearing Area Actually Matters

Wheel hub attachment: the flange prevents the bolt from pulling into the aluminum hub when you torque the wheel nuts. Transmission housing: the flange keeps the bolt from pulling through the stamped steel housing. Engine mount: softer materials under the bolt head need the extra bearing area to distribute clamp load without deforming. If your joint material is steel and your clamp load is modest, a standard hex bolt may be fine - the flange head bolt earns its cost when the joint material is the constraint.

Quality is non-negotiable in precision manufacturing. Every component undergoes rigorous inspection at each stage of production.

  • IATF 16949 - Automotive quality management system for safety-critical components
  • PPAP / PPF - Production Part Approval Process documentation available on request
  • AIAG Core Tools - APQP, FMEA, SPC, and MSA documentation on demand
  • Passivation / Electropolishing - ASTM A967 procedures for corrosion resistance
  • Material Traceability - Heat number tracking from raw material to finished part

From raw material to finished product, every step is controlled and documented:

  • Material Preparation - Sheet, plate, or extruded profile with material certification
  • Forming / Cutting - Laser cutting, CNC punching, or bending to shape
  • Welding / Joining - TIG/MIG welding or mechanical fastening per design
  • Machining - CNC milling/turning for machined features and threaded holes
  • Surface Treatment - Anodizing, powder coating, passivation, or polishing
  • Assembly - Hardware insertion, gasket mounting, or sub-assembly as required
  • Inspection & Testing - Fit-check, hipot testing, and visual inspection
  • Cleaning & Packaging - Degreasing and protective foam packaging
