Spur gears transmit power between parallel shafts - teeth are cut straight across the face, engaging without the axial thrust that helical gears create. The simple tooth engagement means straightforward bearing arrangements and minimal heat generation, which is why spur gears remain common in industrial gearboxes, printing presses, and material handling equipment. 8620 case-hardening steel provides a hard wear-resistant surface with a ductile core underneath, so it handles shock loads without fracturing. 1045 through-hardened is suitable for moderate loads at a lower cost point. 303 stainless is selected for food processing or wash-down environments where rust cannot be tolerated.

Why Spur Gears Still Dominate Simple Power Transmission

 

Helical gears are quieter and handle higher speeds, but they create axial thrust that must be managed with thrust bearings. That adds cost and complexity. For a simple two-shaft reducer where shafts are already supported by bearings, spur gears are often the right choice - no thrust issues, simpler assembly, lower cost.
