Copper plated terminals provide the solderability and electrical conductivity of copper with the mechanical strength of steel underneath. The copper layer solders easily - making these the standard choice for electrical connections where the terminal must be soldered to a wire or PCB. Without copper plating, soldering to steel is difficult and unreliable. The copper layer is typically 3 to 15 micrometers thick - enough to provide good solderability and electrical conductivity without adding significant cost. Thicker copper provides better corrosion resistance for outdoor applications.

Copper Plated vs. Silver Plated

 

Copper plating: better solderability, lower cost, the standard for general electrical connections. Silver plating: better conductivity, does not oxidize as quickly, preferred for high-frequency RF applications and premium electrical connections.
