description

Oilfield drill tool forgings serve the demanding environment of rotary drilling - the tools that cut through rock, stabilize the drill string, and transmit weight to the bit. These forgings have to handle high bending loads, repeated impacts, and the abrasive environment of drilling through formation rock. 4140 and 8630 alloy steels are the most common materials for drill tool forgings - good strength and toughness at reasonable cost for the variety of drilling environments encountered. 4340 provides higher strength for heavy-duty applications where the higher alloy content is justified. Open-die forging handles the larger drill collar and stabilizer forgings where the geometry requires flexibility in die positioning. Closed-die forging produces smaller tools efficiently with good dimensional accuracy.

Drill Collar Math

Drill collars are heavy-walled tubes that add weight to the bottom of the drill string - the weight (WOB, weight on bit) needed to drill efficiently. The drill collar must be heavy enough to provide that weight without buckling, which means the wall thickness and material grade are calculated based on the expected WOB and drill string configuration.

FAQ

Q1: MOQ?

A1: 5 pieces for standard drill tool forgings.

Q2: Materials?

A2: 4140, 8630, 4340 alloy steel.

Q3: API spec?

A3: API 7-1 governs drill tool forging requirements.

Q4: Heat treatment?

A4: Quenched and tempered or case-hardened depending on application requirements.

Q5: Custom configurations?

A5: Yes. Custom tool geometries for specific drilling applications.

Q6: Quality inspection?

A6: Yes. Hardness verification and dimensional inspection standard.

Quality is non-negotiable in precision manufacturing. Every component undergoes rigorous inspection at each stage of production.

  • ISO 9001:2015 - Certified quality management system covering design, machining, and inspection
  • Passivation / Electropolishing - ASTM A967 procedures for corrosion resistance
  • Material Traceability - Heat number tracking from raw material to finished part
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) - Full dimensional report included with every new order

From raw material to finished product, every step is controlled and documented:

  • Billet Heating - Precision heating to forging temperature with temperature monitoring
  • Forging - Closed-die, open-die, or ring rolling to near-net shape
  • Trimming / Piercing - Flash removal and bore operations
  • Heat Treatment - Through-hardening, case-hardening, or age-hardening as required
  • Finishing Machining - CNC machining, grinding, or super-finishing to final dimensions
  • Surface Treatment - Anodizing, plating, or shot peening as specified
  • Inspection & Testing - Dimensional check, hardness testing, surface inspection
  • Cleaning & Packaging - Degreasing, rust prevention, and protective packaging
