Aluminum motor housings protect motor windings and dissipate the heat that operation generates. From small fractional horsepower motors to large industrial drives, the housing has to manage mechanical protection, heat removal, and weight - and these goals do not always point in the same direction. A380 die-cast aluminum fills complex geometries efficiently at high volume - good fluidity, thin walls, cost-effective. 6061-T6 plate machines precisely with excellent strength-to-weight ratio. A356-T6 sand casting resists corrosion better, which matters for outdoor and marine motors. Stator bores, register fits, and mounting patterns follow NEMA or IEC frame standards - interchangeability with standard motors is usually important. IP44 through IP66 ratings specify how much dust and water protection the enclosure provides.

IP44: protected against solid objects over 1 mm and water spray from any direction. IP54: dust-protected and splash water from any direction. IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. Most industrial motors are IP44–IP55. Wash-down and outdoor motors typically need IP66.
